Offered annually for over 60 years, the ‘Short Course’ is a 2-week program consisting of an immersive set of lectures, workshops, tutorials and demonstrations to understand the breadth of modern human genetics. The faculty includes leaders in contemporary genetics and genomics from Johns Hopkins, The Jackson Laboratory and other institutions around the world. The course covers basic science, clinical and translational aspects of human genetics and genomics, and runs the gamut from gene and variant discovery in Mendelian and complex disease, genome biology, the molecular basis of genetic disease, the use of animal models of human disease to understand pathophysiology, as well as genetic disease treatment and therapy. Workshops and lectures also cover bioinformatics, population genetics, genome manipulation, mutagenesis and phenotyping.
A small number (less than 5 hours) of primer lectures will be released at least two weeks prior to the course. Daily, live lectures will take place from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm EDT which will include daytime lectures, a panel discussion and Q&A session and a featured lecture. There will be a lunch break from 12:30 - 1:00pm EDT as well as a 20 minute afternoon break.
Live workshops will be offered on select mornings of the course from 8:30 - 10:00 am EDT. Recordings of these will be posted on Canvas for those not able to attend live.
Recordings of lectures will be made available (per speaker permissions) on a centralized Canvas course and will be uploaded within 72 hours of airing. Please note: this virtual instance of the course will not include a poster session.

We've partnered with the African Society of Human Genetics to shine a light on the importance of African genetics and diversity. Friday, July 23 will feature lectures on African genetics & diversity, including our special, live, 2-hour African genetics panel. You'll hear short talks from 6 prominent speakers followed by a panel discussion of overlapping themes. Reduced pricing for the entire course is available to members of the African Society for Human Genetics. Please contact the event planner for more details.
