Shannan Morris

Interim Chief Communications Officer

Shannan Morris is the interim chief communications officer for The Jackson Laboratory (JAX). Morris is responsible for developing communications strategies to raise the institution’s visibility and influence, in order to increase support for its mission and goals.

Morris joined the Laboratory in 2015 as part of the newly formed Strategic Communications team as the Senior Campaign Manager, responsible for marketing communications and campaigns for education, human resources, philanthropy and corporate brand across scientific, general public and donor audiences. In 2020, Morris was promoted to Director of Integrated Marketing where he helped grow the marketing team, which now includes social media, brand and executive communications support. During his tenure at JAX, Morris has worked with senior leaders on key initiatives including the Maine Cancer Genomics Initiative, animal care recruitment, the CUBE Initiative and JAX brand.

Prior to JAX,  Morris was at Cynosure, Inc. in Marlborough, Mass., where he led a $60m global medical device product portfolio and marketing communications for clinician and consumer markets. As part of his role at Cynosure, Morris was responsible clinical education, thought leader development, upstream product development and distributorships in South America, EMEA and China. Prior to joining Cynosure, Morris was a product manager for Palomar, Inc. in Burlington, Mass, an energy based medical device manufacturer that was eventually bought by Cynosure. Morris brings to JAX a breadth of experience across biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, with prior experience at SmithKline Beecham and GlaxoSmithKline. He has worked in sales, sales training and marketing across multiple disease areas,  including diabetes, cardiovascular, psychiatric and women’s health . He joined SmithKline Beacham Pharmaceuticals in 1999 and helped launch multiple best in-class products including Avandia, Coreg, Baycol and Boniva.

Throughout his communications and marketing career, Morris has received recognition for his work including being selected for the GSK Leadership Development Program, two Ruby President Club Awards and SmithKline Sales Training Leader Program.

Morris received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kenan-Flagler Business School. Morris is also a graduate of the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program for digital strategy. Morris is a Distinguished Military Graduate of the U.S. Army ROTC program at UNCW, a U.S. Army Airborne qualified parachutist and graduate of the U.S. Army Ordnance School.
