Matthew Simon, Ph.D.

Senior Study Director, Lead Scientist

Lead scientist in the rare disease neurodevelopmental program. Coordinates with patient advocacy groups and research partners to develop research programs to characterize new mouse models for genetic diseases and explore therapeutic testing.

Matt joined the Rare Disease Translational Center in November, 2022, where he oversees a portfolio of projects focused on rare, neurodevelopmental disorders. These include Rett Syndrome, Dravet Syndrome, Hereditary Spastic Paraplegias, Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation, and several others. In addition, he oversees the development of additional models and programs under a growing team of study directors and project managers.

Matt received a B.S. in molecular biology in addition to a B.S. in biochemistry at the Florida Institute of Technology. He received a Ph.D in genetics and molecular biology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill for his work on heritable epigenetic stress and its link to repetitive genetic elements. He then moved to the University of Rochester to continue research in aging-related stress using mouse and cell models.
