The Jackson Laboratory appoints new general counsel and corporate secretary

The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) today announced that Daniel “Dan” R. Hoag, J.D. has been appointed general counsel and corporate secretary. He will assume the post on May 10, 2021 and will be based at the organization’s Farmington, Connecticut campus.

Dan will be responsible for ensuring that the Laboratory’s activities meet all legal requirements, including overseeing compliance and regulatory activities, facilitating commercial transactions, sponsored research agreements and JAX’s intellectual property matters. He will also keep records for the Board of Trustees as corporate secretary. 

“Dan brings over 20 years of broad experience in the not-for-profit and research sectors as in-house counsel,” said Catherine “Katy” Longley, executive vice president and chief operating officer, The Jackson Laboratory. “His experience and skills will be valuable assets as the Laboratory continues to grow, furthering our groundbreaking research and mission to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and improve human health.”

A portrait of Dan HoagDan joins JAX from The MITRE Corporation in McLean, Virginia and Bedford, Massachusetts, a not-for-profit organization that establishes public-private partnerships and manages federally funded research and development centers. In his role at MITRE, he served as associate general counsel and chief privacy official, providing support in the health care, defense and intelligence, aviation, civil systems, homeland security, judiciary, and cybersecurity sectors. His career also includes extensive experience with sponsored research and material transfer agreements with multiple agency entities of the Department of Health and Human Services, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Defense, and providing legal advice on intellectual property, international business matters, partnerships, commercial and government contracts, export control, technology transfer agreements, as well as cyber security and data protection issues.

His previous posts include serving as senior counsel at Kronos Incorporated and assistant general counsel at AECOM (formally ENSR) Corporation. In these positions he handled a wide range of legal issues, including employment matters, contracts, benefits, real estate, mergers and acquisitions, licensing deals, litigation, and environmental safety.

Dan began his legal career as a summer clerk to U.S. Federal District Court Senior Judge Loughlin in Concord, New Hampshire and as a law clerk at the Thurgood Marshall Federal Judicial Center in Washington, D.C. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the George Washington University Law School. He serves on the legal counsel committee of the Advanced Cyber Security Center based in Boston, Massachusetts. He is also a certified FAA pilot.
