JAX Senescence Tissue Mapping Centers

About

JAX-Sen and KAPP-Sen each refer to The Jackson Laboratory's (JAX) participation in the NIH’s Cellular Senescence Network (SenNet) Program. The JAX-Sen Mouse Tissue Mapping Center (TMC) is led by Nadia Rosenthal, Ron Korstanje, and Paul Robson and is, like the KAPP-Sen Human TMC, a collaboration between JAX and UConn Health.

What is cellular senescence?

Cellular senescence is a process that results from a variety of stresses and leads to a state of irreversible growth arrest. Senescent cells accumulate during aging and have been implicated in promoting a variety of age-related diseases. Cellular senescence may play an important role in tumor suppression, wound healing, and protection against tissue fibrosis; however, accumulating evidence that senescent cells may have harmful effects in vivo and may contribute to tissue remodeling, organismal aging, and many age-related diseases also exists.

How do the JAX-Sen and KAPP-Sen Tissue Mapping Centers bridge mice and humans?

JAX Associate Research Scientist Juliana Alcoforado-Diniz describes how investigators at the Robson Lab work with collaborators to gather and analyze a variety of tissues to better understand and characterize senescence in mice and humans.

Dig deeper in this SenNet Interview Series conversation with Dr. Diniz, which includes description of scRNA-seq and snRNA-seq technologies, as well as spatial omics analysis, being used by the JAX-Sen and KAPP-Sen Tissue Mapping Centers to profile and study organ tissues.

The Tissue Mapping Centers are organized around the following cores:

  image

Biological Analysis Core

The Biological Analysis Core applies a multitude of analytical modalities to selected tissues.

  image

Data Analysis Core

This core combines robust computational capability with scalable and reproducible scientific workflows to develop and implement Network- wide open data and metadata standards.

  image

Administrative Core

The Administrative Core provides a strong oversight of project progress and nurture a culture of collaborative, dynamic scientific exchange.

Explore the data

The SenNet Data Portal provides publicly accessible atlases of senescent cells, the differences among them, and the molecules they secrete, using data collected from multiple human and model organism tissues by JAX-Sen, KAPP-Sen, and other Tissue Mapping Centers (TMCs) and Technology Development and Application Projects (TDAs) across the country. In this searchable inventory, the KAPP-Sen TMC is listed as ’TMC - UConn Health’ and the JAX-Sen TMC is listed as ’TMC - The Jackson Laboratory'.
