Biology is inherently complex, variable, and shaped by many confounding factors. Yet most preclinical studies rely on episodic, low-resolution measurements that capture isolated moments and miss the optimal responses that occur over time in biological systems. This results in low-sensitivity measurements that miss the vital biological signal. Additionally, these reductionist approaches fail to consider the multidimensional nature of the systems they study.
This results in research plagued by inconclusive outcomes with drug approval rates near 10% (Schuhmacher et al 2025), and efficacy failures driving half of project terminations (Sun et al 2022). In fact more than half of published animal studies cannot be reliably reproduced (von Kortzfleisch et al 2024).
Combining continuous measurement and an approach that accounts for the multidimensional nature of biological systems requires the systematic application of AI models to be data streamed from digital devices. There were no elegant solutions to transform continuous observations into reliable measures and perform the required analysis at the pace at which biology actually occurs until now.

Behavioral phenotyping in Rett models is especially challenging. Key features like motor deficits, cognitive impairment, and repetitive behaviors can be subtle. The standard approach in Rett is the Bird score, which measures, gait, mobility, breathing and general condition.
Performing a study with both conventional observational methods and the continuous activity scores from the Envision Platform yielded the following important observations that were not discernable with conventional measures alone.
