The residential experience outside of the laboratory is a critical part of the Summer Student experience at JAX Genomic Medicine (JAX-GM). Students at the Farmington campus are housed at the University of St. Joseph (USJ), a private university located 5 miles away from JAX-GM in West Hartford.

Housing and dining

The suite-style dormitory offers all modern amenities, including a common kitchen and bathroom, a living room space and separate bedrooms. Students have 24/7 access to the JAX fitness center on the research campus, as well as access to fitness and recreational facilities at USJ, which include a swimming pool, outdoor sand volleyball courts, and indoor and outdoor tracks. The dormitory overlooks USJ’s beautiful campus, which is situated close to a vibrant downtown West Hartford and several popular cultural centers. Meals are generally provided in the USJ dining hall located near the dormitory. Shared meals and game nights are common practice at USJ. The residence life team includes a JAX Residence Supervisor and Resident Advisor, who help support the development of a close-knit, scholarly community that both works and has fun together.

Residential community and activities

The residential experience for summer students at our Farmington campus is truly a customized mix of greater New England culture and the beauty of the outdoors both near campus and throughout Connecticut.   From USJ, students have many opportunities for offsite activities in West Hartford and the surrounding areas including Talcott Mountain, Blue Back Square and beautiful Elizabeth Park. Planned excursions include day trips to Boston and New York City, which includes a visit and behind the scenes tour of the American Museum of Natural History, as well as a day at a nearby beach, such as Misquamicut State Beach in Rhode Island.

Other weekend activities vary from year to year and are planned according students’ interests.  Past activities have included tubing on the Farmington River, attending a Yard Goats game (the local minor league baseball team), attending a Cirque du Soleil show, kayaking and day hikes.
