Genomic Scientist II

Supports workflows for sequencing-based projects and the development, validation, and implementation of new genomic protocols.

Purva Vats is a Genomic Scientist II with the Genome Technologies group at JAX, where she supports a broad range of sequencing-based projects and contributes to the development, validation, and implementation of new genomic workflows. She obtained her PhD in microbiology from the Institute of Microbial Technology, India and completed postdoctoral training in bacterial genetics at UConn Health before transitioning to next-generation sequencing workflows at JAX.

Her work includes preparing short- and long-read libraries for whole-genome sequencing (WGS), metagenomic sequencing (mWGS), amplicon, and RNA-Seq applications to sequence on a variety of Illumina platforms and PacBio sequencer. She is also involved in custom library projects and designing new assays, including efforts to isolate high molecular weight DNA from blood, tissues, and dried blood spots — critical for rare disease studies and long-read sequencing on the Revio platform. Her role encompasses direct execution of experiments, quality control evaluation, and troubleshooting of complex technical challenges.

With over two decades of experience in microbiology, genomics, and molecular biology, she brings strong technical expertise and a deep understanding of research and laboratory management.
