Health Status Reports

Overview

JAX® Mice are bred within and shipped from multiple breeding rooms, either from The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, or from our In Vivo Pharmacology Services facility in Sacramento, California. Health status reports are available as PDF files (see below). These reports are organized on the basis of the shipping room of origin, which is also the breeding room of origin.

Links to the health status reports for the mouse rooms where particular strains are maintained are available under the “Practical Support” tab on each strain’s datasheet. You may also contact Customer Service or Technical Support for questions regarding a strain’s location.

Breeding rooms for JAX® Mice are maintained in our production, repository or research facilities. All mice coming into The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, from ANY outside source are received in our quarantine facility where they are housed in negatively pressurized ventilated cages and where all mouse manipulations are performed in biosafety cabinets prior to rederivation. All incoming mice are rederived, and the rederived mice are tested for —and proven free of— all excluded agents and selected opportunists (see the list of agents monitored in JAX mouse rooms and outbreak communications policies web page) prior to release into the production, repository or research colonies. Individual animal housing rooms are maintained at different barrier levels: standard, high and maximum in the production and repository facilities and low, intermediate and elevated in the research facility. See the JAX facility barrier level descriptions web page for details.

Health status reports for production and repository facilities

Mice in production and repository facilities are bred specifically for distribution to customers. The exception is the SPF facility that holds animals with a defined aerobic flora that are bred primarily as an in-house resource but that may be available in limited numbers for distribution to customers.

Animal health statement for surgical suites in Bar Harbor, Maine and Sacramento, CA.

Surgically altered JAX® Mice may originate from several areas in The Jackson Laboratory's production or repository facilities. Areas that may provide mice include AX1, AX2, AX3, AX4, AX5, AX6, AX7, AX8, AX9, AX10, AX11, AX12, AX27, AX28, AX29, AX30, MP13, and MP14. Mice that undergo a surgical procedure are transferred into surgical suites located in AX1, AX3, MP13, MP23 or RB01.

The Jackson Laboratory is fully accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC International). All surgical procedures are approved by the institution's Animal Care and Use Committee, and analgesics are routinely administered to all animals undergoing a surgical procedure. Animals are surgically modified using atraumatic and aseptic technique in a laminar flow hood in the HEPA filtered surgical suites. Once fully recovered from surgery, the mice are packed into new sterile transport boxes and shipped to your facility.

All areas sending mice to the surgical suites participate in the regular JAX® Mice Animal Health Program. Health status reports for rooms sending mice to the surgical suites are available as PDF files at the links above. (A comprehensive listing of the agents that we monitor in our mice is available from our list of agents monitored in JAX mouse rooms and outbreak communications policies web page).

There are minor differences in health status among the different areas sending mice to the Surgical Suite. Depending on the room of origin, mice coming to the Surgical Suite may be positive for Klebsiella spp.. The occasional identification of other bacteria, e.g., Staphylococcus aureus, provokes a clinical investigation to identify and eliminate all infected mice.

Health status reports for research facilities in Bar Harbor, Maine

Mice maintained in our research facilities are mostly maintained by our faculty for research purposes. Some colonies are maintained as resources colonies and consist of less commonly used strains that are bred specifically for distribution to customers or for in-house use.
