The Jackson Laboratory

Biomedical Data Science in Context

A two-week residential program for undergraduate students to learn how to connect their passion for biology with the power of data science.

About the Program

Are you an undergraduate student curious about how data science can be used to solve biomedical problems, but still new to coding or statistics? You’re not alone. Many students are exploring these tools but lack access to integrated coursework or time to take multiple technical classes.

JAX’s Biomedical Data Science in Context (BDSiC) program is designed for students like you. Whether your institution doesn’t offer data science courses or your major makes it hard to fit them in, this program offers a focused, immersive alternative.

You’ll join a community of academically driven, passionate learners who are ready to build real-world skills and explore the future of biomedical research.

A Curriculum That Builds Your Confidence

Over two weeks, you’ll be immersed in a curriculum that blends technical training with mentorship and career planning. You’ll work on real biomedical data projects, guided by professionals who use data science to make discoveries every day.

This experience is designed to help you:

  • Strengthen your skills in programming, statistics and genomics
  • Gain hands-on experience with biomedical datasets
  • Explore career paths and academic opportunities with confidence

What to Expect at BDSiC

Live and Learn Together
This is more than a course — it’s a residential experience. You’ll live alongside peers and mentors in a collaborative setting that encourages deep learning and connection.

Work with JAX Scientists
Throughout the program, you’ll engage directly with researchers and data experts from The Jackson Laboratory. These professionals will share insights into how data science is transforming biomedical research.

Plan Your Next Steps
You’ll have dedicated time to reflect on your goals and map out your future — whether that’s a summer research experience, a project at your home institution, or preparing for graduate school.

By the end of BDSiC, you will have:

  • A strong foundation in biomedical data science
  • Increased confidence in your computational thinking and problem-solving
  • A clear understanding of how to apply data science to real biomedical challenges
  • A personalized plan for your next academic or professional step

Who is Eligible?

At the time of participation, applicants must:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student or in a postbaccalaureate research program at a U.S. based institution.
