This comprehensive workshop is designed for individuals at all experience levels working with laboratory mice. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the principles and practices essential for maintaining healthy, genetically sound colonies, while applying best practices through expert-led, hands-on training.
This workshop is a great fit for professionals working in academic labs as well as those in biotech and pharma, delivering practical, high-impact skills that elevate research quality and efficiency.
Topics Covered:
- Mouse genetics and strain nomenclature
- Colony set-up and breeding strategies
- Managing mouse health, including immunocompromised mouse models
- Genetic quality control
- Genetic background effects on phenotypes
- Experimental design to support rigor and reproducibility
- Strategies to minimize genetic variability, including genetic drift
- Cryopreservation and assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) as colony management tools
- Nutritional considerations
- Colony management record-keeping best practices
In-Person Experience
Participants will engage in dynamic lectures as well as hands-on training in essential mouse techniques led by leading experts at our Bar Harbor, Maine location. Hands-on sessions include core skills such as mouse handling and restraint, oral gavage, perfusion, injections (IP, subcutaneous and tail vein), blood collection (submental, tail tip and terminal cardiac puncture), euthanasia techniques (CO₂ inhalation, cervical dislocation, decapitation, and thoracic puncture), as well as mouse anatomy, bone marrow isolation and preparation of single-cell suspensions from spleen.
As time permits, participants will also have the opportunity to rotate through a subset of the following hands-on techniques: suturing and wound clip application; intranasal inoculation; retro-orbital and intradermal injections; urine and fecal collection; intramuscular injections (Quad, Gastric, Tibialis) as well as submandibular and saphenous vein blood collection.
Virtual Access
Can’t attend in person? Our virtual format ensures you won’t miss out. Access live-streamed lectures, engage in Q&A sessions, and benefit from recorded content available for three months post-course. Note: Virtual participants will not have access to content from hands-on sessions.
