Mice homozygous for the twisted 5 Jackson mutation have a severe head-tilt but do not circle the way other twisted mutants do. In a swim test they swim tilted to one side usually just below the surface of the water. ABR readings show that these mice are severely hearing impaired at wean age and profoundly deaf by 70 days of age. Otoconial deficiencies exist that are likely due to displacement of the otolithic membrane.
The twisted 5 Jackson mutation arose spontaneously on the C57BL/6J inbred background at The Jackson Laboratory, where it was identified in January 2007. It was backcrossed once to C57BL/6J and subsequently maintained on this background by sibling mating.
