Skimpy homozygotes are smaller than their littermates, walk on their toes, have poor balance, and die by four weeks of age.
The skimpy mutation arose spontaneously in the strain CXB5/ByJ at The Jackson Laboratory in 2001 when that recombinant inbred strain was at generation F107. This mutant subline has been maintained by sibling inbreeding progeny tested heterozygotes ever since.
