Like other reeler mutants, reeler 8 Jackson homozygotes display a wobbly gait and ataxia by twp weeks of age. More severe than many reeler mutants, reeler 8 Jackson homozygotes on this background die by approximately three weeks of age. The Cerebellum is small with scrambled Purkinje and granule cells, there is scrambled layering in the cortex, and the neurons of the hippocampal gyrus are scattered in irregular wavy layers.
The reeler 8 Jackson mutation was ENU induced in C57BL/6J and subsequently crossed to C3Fe.Cg-Rw then C3Fe.Cg-Hm +/+ Rw, before being maintained by closed colony breeding and sibling inbreeding. The resulting line is black (a/a) and reached generation F13 in 2008.
