Homozygotes display a moderate tremor and smaller body size by 2 weeks of age and progressive weakness and wasting follows leading to death by 3 to 4 weeks of age in nearly all homozygotes.
The trls2J mutation arose spontaneously in the strain WB/ReJ KitW/J (Stock No. 000692) in 2005 and was moved onto the C57BL/6J background via backcross-intercross breeding. The KitW mutation was backcrossed out of this mutant subline. In 2008 this strain reached backcross generation N5.
