Homozygotes have an overall reduced body size, smaller than normal ear pinnae, hearing loss, and reduced fertility.
The little ears mutation arose spontaneously in the C57BL/6J sequence of a B6.CAST congenic research strain used for mapping a QTL. This spontaneous mutation was backcrossed twice onto C57BL/6J and then maintained by sibling intercross of primarily heterozygotes and homozygotes. In 2010 this strain reached generation +N2F4.
