Homozygotes can be identified by two weeks of age on this nonagouti background by their diluted steel grey coat color, which includes dilited pigment in the ears, feet, and tail. Homozygotes are viable and fertile.
The overall diluted appearance mutation arose spontaneously in 2001 at The Jackson Laboratory in STOCK Tg(CAG-EGFP)D4Nagy/J (stock #003116), which has 129 sublines and ICR in its genetic background. This mutant subline was maintained by sibling intercrossing for several years before it was backcrossed onto the C57BL/6J background by backcross-intercross breeding. This strain reached generation N5 in 2011.
