Mice homozygous for the twisted 2 Jackson mutation have a severe head-tilt and move in the circling pattern indicative of a vestibular defect. In a swim test they swim tilted to one side usually just below the surface of the water. ABR readings show that these mice are severely hearing impaired at wean age and profoundly deaf by 70 days of age. Otoconial deficiencies exist that are likely due to displacement of the otolithic membrane.
The twister 2 Jackson mutation arose spontaneously in 2004 in the C57BR/cdJ inbred strain at The Jackson Laboratory and has been maintained on this background ever since.
