Mice homozygous for the dreidel mutation are deaf and exhibit vertical head tossing, circling and general hyperactive behavior indicative of a vestibular dysfunction. Auditory brainstem response thresholds of deaf homozygous dreidel mice were reported to be above 100 dB sound pressure level whereas the thresholds of age-matched heterozygous dreidel mice were 35 dB and indistinguishable from wild-type mice.
|Gene Symbol and Name||Pou4f3, POU domain, class 4, transcription factor 3|
|Strain of Origin||C57BL/6J|
|Molecular Note||The molecular mutation of this allele is a TG dinucleotide deletion (nt #841-842 from GenBank accession number S69352) resulting in premature stop codon upstream of the POU box and homeodomains of the encoded protein.|
homozygous females do not make good mothers.
