This NOR/Lt congenic strain is carrying alleles derived from strain NOD/Lt for interleukin 1a (Il1aNOD), adenosine deaminase (Ada) and insulin dependent diabetes susceptibility 13 (Idd13NOD) loci. Neither males nor females from this congenic strain when aged to 40 weeks showed diabetes development. This strain is useful for dissecting the role of non-MHC susceptibility genes in autoimmune diabetes.

The congenic stock NOR.NOD-(Il1-Ada)/Lt, carrying a defined segment of Chr 2 that includes the NOD/Lt insulin dependent diabetes susceptibility locus Idd13 (71cM), was produced by mating mice from NOR/Lt to NOD/Lt followed by crossing 20 times to NOR/Lt with selection of NOD Il1 (94cM) genotype at each generation. An additional genome wide scan verified NOR homozygosity at all other chromosomal regions known to differ between NOD/Lt and NOR/Lt. This congenic strain retains NOR/Lt genome from D2Mit277 (69.0cM) through D2Mit395 (66.9cM) . The Il1-Ada region of Chr 2 in NOR/Lt was originally derived from the C57BL/6 contribution to strain C57BLKS/J; thus, this congenic strain retains B6 alleles for the microsatellite markers D2Mit277 through D2Mit395, including the functional gene B2m (69.0cM) (Reifsnyder et al, 2005). In 2006, the T1DR received this strain at N21F28.

General Note | B6.NOD-Idd13 congenic animals exhibit defective iNKT cell induced IFN-gamma response. This phenotype resembles that of the NOD parental. |
Molecular Note | This allele confers defective cytokine response (IL-2, IL-4, IFN-gamma, CSF-2) when stimulated with antigens compared to C57BL/6. |

The Jackson Laboratory has rigorous genetic quality control and mutant gene genotyping programs to ensure the genetic background of JAX® Mice strains as well as the genotypes of strains with identified molecular mutations. JAX® Mice strains are only made available to researchers after meeting our standards. However, the phenotype of each strain may not be fully characterized and/or captured in the strain data sheets. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a strain's phenotype will meet all expectations. To ensure that JAX® Mice will meet the needs of individual research projects or when requesting a strain that is new to your research, we suggest ordering and performing tests on a small number of mice to determine suitability for your particular project. We do not guarantee breeding performance and therefore suggest that investigators order more than one breeding pair to avoid delays in their research.
