This strain represents one of a panel of chromosome substitution (or consomic) strains. Each strain carries a chromosome from the 129P3/J strain introgressed into a C57BL/6ByJ background. These strains represent a tool for dissection of quantitative trait loci (QTL). In particular, these two strains exhibit differences in body composition, alcohol consumption and taste responsiveness. QTL have been identified on Chr 9 at NaCl taste threshold (Nattq2), body weight (Bw16), and adiposity (Adip5).
