Stearoyl-Coenzyme A desaturase (coded by Scd2) is an enzyme involved in maintaining lipid and energy metabolism, particularly lipid synthesis in the skin and liver in early development. These Scd2flox mice possess loxP sites flanking exon 3 of the Scd2 gene. Heterozygous and homozygous mice are viable and fertile with no overt phenotype. When bred to mice that express tissue-specific Cre recombinase, the resulting offspring will have Scd2 exon 3 deleted in the cre-expressing tissues, leading to ~89% reduction of SCD2. These mice may be useful when studying lipid and energy homeostasis as well as the early development of skin and liver tissues. Of note, this floxed mouse line maintains a PGK-neomycin (neo) selection cassette. The donating laboratory indicates that the neo cassette does not disrupt Scd2 expression; however, differential Cre-recombination events have not been evaluated.
