The Slc4a4 (solute carrier family 4 (anion exchanger), member 4) gene, also known as Nbc1, codes for a protein involved with regulating bicarbonate secretion and absorption. Mutations in this gene may be associated with cardiac dysfunction, proximal renal tubular acidosis (RTA), ocular abnormalities, and familial hemiplegic migraines. These Slc4a4-floxed mice have lox sites flanking exon 12 of the Slc4a4 gene. Homozygous mice are viable and fertile with no overt phenotype. When bred to mice that express tissue-specific Cre recombinase, resulting offspring will have exon 12 deleted, ablating all Slc4a4 transcripts in the cre-expressing tissues. When these floxed mice are bred to a Pax8-Cre line, resulting in deletion of NBC1 in kidneys, the mice develop proximal RTA with metabolic acidosis. These mice may be useful when studying the effects of NBC1 on intracellular pH levels.
