Pyy-Cre mice express a constitutively active cre recombinase gene under the control of the mouse peptide YY (Pyy) promoter (derived from a BAC). Pyy encodes a member of the neuropeptide Y (NPY) family expressed in murine pancreatic and colonic endocrine cells during embryonic development. It is also expressed in islet progenitor cells and its expression is extinguished during the maturation of alpha and beta cells. PYY has widespread inhibitory effects on gastrointestinal function, including inhibition of gastric emptying, gastric motility, and pancreatic exocrine secretion. This gene has implications in the regulation of food intake, energy homeostasis, and endocrine differentiation in the gastrointestinal tract. In this strain, PYY directs expression of cre recombinase in gut endocrine and neuropod cells in the colon and half of the glucagon-expressing cells in the islets. When transgenic mice are bred with mice containing loxP-flanked sequences, Cre-mediated recombination will result in deletion of floxed sequences in Cre-expressing cells of the offspring. Homozygous mice are viable and fertile with no reported phenotype abnormalities.
