Ccdc198 (coiled-coil domain containing 198 or FAME) is associated with higher body mass, diabetes-related pathologies, and macular degeneration in GWAS studies. FAME (Factor Associated with Metabolism and Energy) is expressed in kidney (proximal tubules) and to a lesser extent in pancreas, liver and fallopian tube.Knock-out mice contain a double stop codon inserted after the initator ATG site. Mice homozygous for the Ccdc198 mutation are viable and fertile. On the FVB background KO mice exhibit increased body weight, a decrease in locomotor activity, decreased ferritin levels, high amounts of albumin in urine, decreased numbers of platelets (females only), a reduced size of kidneys, adrenal glands, interscapular brown adipose tissue, and liver was observed, which is analogous to control mice on a low iron diet. Please note: mice are segregating alleles for the chinchilla coat color (Tyrc-ch) and the wild type Pde6b allele (normally carries the retinal degeneration 1 [rd1] mutation in FVB mice).
