Description

FC (FVB/NJ-mt^{MNX(C57BL/6J)}) is a conplastic strain in which the FVB/NJ strain carries the mitochondrial genome from C57BL/6J. This strain can be used for studies of complex diseases that have quantitative trait loci (QTL) identified in mitochondrial DNA.

Of note: FB (FVB/NJ-mt^MNX(BALB/cJ)) is distributed as FVB/NJ-mt^BALB/cJ/DrweJ, Stock No. 038429. This strain carries the mitochondrial genome from BALB/cJ on the FVB/NJ host.

Detailed description

FC (FVB/NJ-mt^{MNX(C57BL/6J)}) is a conplastic strain in which the FVB/NJ strain carries the mitochondrial genome from C57BL/6J. FC mice are viable and fertile. Also referred to as Mitochondrial Nuclear Exchange (MNX) (PMID: 27840835), this strain was developed using nuclear transfer rather than through backcross; it can be used for research involving complex diseases that have quantitative trait loci (QTL) identified in mitochondrial DNA. This strain has been used in studies of tumor metastasis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity.

Development

Dr. Danny Welch of the University of Kansas Medical Center developed the FVB/N-mt^C57BL/6J/Drwe conplastic strain by enucleating a fertilized oocyte from C57BL/6J and then transferring the nucleus from FVB/NJ. A conplastic strain carries the mitochondrial genome of a different inbred strain. The technique is referred to as Mitochondrial Nuclear Exchange (MNX). (PMID: 27840835)
