Eif5a (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A) is an mRNA translation factor that is a component of pathways that promote oncogenesis by enabling the production of proteins involved in cellular migration and growth. Conventional knock-out of the mouse Eif5a gene results in embryonic lethality. Exons 4-7 of the mouse Eif5a gene are flanked by loxP sites in these Eif5aLoxP mice. Cre recombinase-mediated excision of the floxed region results in a gene knock-out allele useful in studies of pancreatic disease and cancer. Pancreas-specific knockout of the mouse Eif5a gene results in the loss of acinar cells and a delayed growth phenotype.
