NJ.1726 transgenic mice contain a transgene designed with the rat secretoglobin, family 1A, member 1 (uteroglobin) (Scgb1a1) promoter directing expression of a 5.5-kb interleukin 5 (Il5) cDNA in lung epithelium. IL-5 is a cytokine that plays a major role in the regulation of eosinophil differentiation, maturation, recruitment and survival. Mice from this founder line, NJ.1726, have 15 copies of the transgene. Hemizygous mice are viable and fertile. The donating laboratory did not attempt to make mice homozygous for the transgene. Bronchoalveolar IL-5 levels were elevated to 294ng/ml and serum levels were approximately 1,700pg/ml. Eosinophils comprise 40% of total blood cells. They exhibit elevated white blood cell counts, including a peripheral eosinophilia, and increases in the peribronchial cellularity of the lung. Additionally, expression of this IL-5 in this strain results in an accumulation of peribronchial eosinophils and pathologic changes including the expansion of bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (BALT), goblet cell hyperplasia, epithelial hypertrophy, and focal collagen deposition. Of note, this transgene is also available on a BALB/c genetic background and Stock No. 036951.

NJ.1726 transgenic mice express murine IL-5 under the control of the rat Clara cell secretory protein promoter which directs expression in the large and small airway epithelium of the lungs. These mice develop hypereosinophilia and lung pathologies similar to some models of innate asthma. They are useful to study eosinophilia in the airways during development and in airway hyperresponsiveness.

Typically mice are recovered in 12-16 weeks. Contact Customer Service to place an order or for more information.
