Ism1 (isthmin 1, angiogenesis inhibitor) encodes a secreted protein that is widely expressed in mice. Conditional Ism1fl mice possess loxP sites flanking exons 2-4. Deletion of exons 2-4 results in a null allele. Ism1fl homozygotes are viable and fertile. Ism1fl/fl mice can be crossed with tissue-specific Cre mice to generate tissue-specific Ism1 knockout mice. When Ism1fl mice are bred to mice with embryonic Cre recombinase expression (B6.FVB-Tg(EIIa-cre)C5379Lmgd/J, Stock No. <a href="https://www.jax.org/strain/003724"">003724</a>), Ism1 knock-out progeny develop impaired glucose tolerance, impaired basal glucose uptake in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and skeletal muscle, and reduced insulin sensitivity in BAT. This strain may be useful in generating conditional mutations to study glucose regulation, diabetes and fatty liver disease.
