Alb-cre transgenic mice express cre recombinase under the control of the mouse albumin enhancer/promoter. This allele has been well characterized and is very efficient for performing liver-specific gene knockouts using the Cre/loxP system. Mice hemizygous for the transgene are viable and fertile and lack any phenotype related to the transgenic allele. The viability/fertility of homozygotes on the 129 background has not been assessed. When crossed with a strain containing a loxP site flanked sequence of interest, the offspring are useful for generating Cre-mediated targeted deletions in Alb-expressing tissues. Cre recombinase activity is specific to hepatocytes. This line has been shown to be nearly 100% efficient in achieving liver-specific recombination when crossed with at least five different floxed alleles. Alb-cre mice on the 129 background may useful for iron metabolism studies. The donating investigator indicates that many iron overload phenotypes are more severe on the 129 background and conversely that iron deficiency phenotypes that may not be viable on C57BL/6 are viable on 129.

 In an attempt to offer alleles on well-characterized or multiple genetic backgrounds, alleles are frequently moved to a genetic background different from that on which an allele was first characterized. It should be noted that the phenotype could vary from that originally described. We will modify the strain description if necessary as published results become available.
