This strain is valuable in the study of addiction. A C-to-A point substitution, rs33645709, which is a strain characteristic of the DBA/2J strain, causes a proline to threonine mutation in amino acid 77 (p.P77T) of trace amine-associated receptor 1, the <em>Taar1<sup>m1J</sup></em> variant. That dominant mutation causes an increase in affinity for and consumption of methamphetamine. This strain has the identical p.P77T point substitution generated in C57BL/6J by CRISPR/cas9. Consistent with the finding in the DBA/2J strain background, the p.P77T amino acid substitution also increases methamphetamine affinity and consumption on this C57BL/6J background.
