Ntrk2 (neurotrophic tyrosine kinase, receptor, type 2; also called trkB) is a receptor for brain derived neurotrophic factor (Bdnf), a neurotrophin which controls aspects of mammalian nervous system development including long-term potentiation in the hippocampus. fBZ conditional reporter/knock-out mice possess loxP sites flanking exon S (first coding exon) of the Ntrk2 gene and a tau-lacZ sequence. Following deletion of the loxP flanked Ntrk2 cDNA by cre-mediated recombination, the tau-lacZ sequence is fused to exon S and expressed under the Ntrk2 promoter. Mice homozygous for the conditional allele are viable and fertile, but develop a 20% reduction in retinal ganglion cells by 3 months of age. When bred to mice that express tissue-specific Cre recombinase, resulting offspring will have exon S deleted in cre-expressing tissues creating an Ntrk2 null allele (and expressing the tau-lacZ reporter). This strain may be useful for studying synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus.
