Exon 2 of the mouse Slc17a6 (sodium-dependant inorganic phosphate cotransporter, member 6; also known as Vglut2) gene is flanked by loxP sites in these Vglut2flox mutant mice. Cre recombinase-mediated excision of the floxed exon generates a knock-out allele. Mice that are homozygous for this floxed allele are viable, fertile, normal in size and do not display any gross physical or behavioral abnormalities. These mice may be useful for studying the effect of transport, packaging, and release of glutamate from ventromedial hypothalamic (VMH) neurons on hypoglycemia. In an attempt to offer alleles on well-characterized or multiple genetic backgrounds, alleles are frequently moved to a genetic background different from that on which an allele was first characterized. This is the case for the strain above. It should be noted that the phenotype could vary from that originally described. We will modify the strain description if necessary as published results become available.
