Eif3f (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3, subunit F) encodes a stress-responsive transcription factor of Slc6a3, a dopamine transporter. Eif3f knock-in/knock-out mice contain a lacZ/neomycin cassette designed to replace exons 1-8 (7130 bp). Heterozygous mice are viable and fertile, but have reduced body weight. In the homozygous state the mutation is embryonic lethal. In the tail suspension and forced swim tests, heterozygotes exhibit reduced immobility times. In the elevated plus maze, heterozygotes spend more time in the open arms than wild-type mice. This strain may be useful in studies of dopaminergic transmission and environmental stress.
