Mas1 (MAS1 oncogene) is a maternally imprinted gene encoding an orphan G protein-coupled receptor expressed mainly in forebrain and testis. It is an important modulating factor in the electrophysiology of the hippocampus and is involved in behavioral pathways in the adult brain.Mas- (MasR KO) mice carry a targeted knock-out of the mouse Mas1 (MAS1 oncogene) gene. RNAse protection assays on RNA derived from brain and testis of homozygous mice indicate that no transcript containing coding sequences is produced from this allele. Targeted disruption of the Mas1 protooncogene leads to an increased durability of long term potentiation in the dentate gyrus, without affecting hippocampal morphology, basal synaptic transmission, and presynaptic function. In addition, Mas knock-out mice show alterations in the onset of depotentiation.&nbsp; Mas1-deficient animals display an increased anxiety, as assessed in the elevated-plus maze. Spatial learning is not significantly influenced. Homozygotes are healthy, grow normally, and show no obvious developmental abnormalities. Although MAS1 is normally expressed at high levels in the testis, knock-out mice are fertile, and in males, the number and motility of spermatocytes as well as testis morphology is unchanged.&nbsp; Drinking behavior and mean arterial pressure are normal.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
