The targeted Cacna1e (calcium channel, voltage-dependent, R type, alpha 1E subunit) gene encodes a subunit of the non-L-type high-voltage activated Cav2 channel subfamily. Cav2.3 Ca2+ channels are involved in Ca2+-induced insulin secretion. These conditional knock-out mice possess loxP sites flanking exon 2. Mice that are homozygous for the targeted mutation are viable and fertile. When bred to mice that express tissue-specific Cre recombinase, resulting offspring will have exon 2 deleted in cre-expressing tissues. Removal of the floxed sequence creates a null allele. These mice may be useful for studying hormone secretion and glucose homeostasis.
When bred to mice expressing a Cre recombinase in most tissues (Tg(CMV-cre)1Cgn), resulting offspring exhibit deficits in insulin release and in stress-induced hyperglycemia
