BALB/c-latency (Tg(LANA,vFLIP,vCYC)801Dtmr) mice express genes from the Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) that are associated with the long-term latency period of infection. These genes include latency associated nuclear antigen (LANA), cellular cyclin D2 homolog (vCYC), K13 (vFLIP), and all KSHV miRNAs including the Mir155 ortholog and K12 (kaposin). KSHV is associated with B lineage lymphotropic disorders as well as Kaposi sarcoma, the most frequent cancer found in HIV-infected patients. The B cell is the primary target for KSHV infection and establishes latency in B cells prior to evidence of disease. BALB/c-latency mice exhibit an increase in mature and activated mature B cells. The chronic activation of mature B cells leads to sustained hyperglobulinemia, plasmacytosis and B cell hyperplasia. Infection of BALB/c-latency mice with Zika virus results in a more efficient antibody response and increased clearance of infection as compared to BALB controls. In the peritoneum, response to pristine-induced inflammation is characterized by a higher incidence of inflammation and accelerated disease onset as compared to BALB controls. This strain may be useful for studying the production of monoclonal antibodies and KSHV-mediated B cell dysregulation on a genetic background that is appropriate for B cell immunobiology, BALB.Importantly, the donating investigator reports that these BALB/c-latency mice do not express any protein/particles that cause infection to humans or other mice.
