The targeted X-linked Cybb gene encodes the cytochrome b-245 beta subunit, a component of the membrane-bound oxidase system in phagocytes, which generates microbicidal superoxide. Mutations in this gene have been associated with X-linked chronic granulomatous disease and immunodeficiency 34, mycobacteriosis. 
These mice possess loxP sites on either side of Cybb exon 5. Female mice that are homozygous for this allele and hemizygous male mice are viable and fertile. When these mutant mice are bred to mice that express Cre recombinase, resulting offspring will have exon 5 deleted in the cre-expressing tissues.
Removal of the floxed sequence creates a null allele. 

When bred to a strain with Cre recombinase expression in the myeloid cell lineage (e.g., Stock No. <a href="https://www.jax.org/strain/004781">004781</a>), this mutant mouse strain may be useful in studies of obesity and macrophage inflammation.

NOX2-floxed mice possess loxP sites flanking exon 5 of the Cybb gene. This strain may be useful for generating conditional mutations for sturying chronic granulomatous disease and the role of phagocyte-derived oxidants in inflammation.
