These aSMA-RFP transgenic mice express a DsRed-Express protein sequence followed by three SV40 polyadenylation signals under control of an extended 5.2kb mouse Acta2 (actin, alpha 2, smooth muscle, aorta) gene promoter that includes the Acta2 promoter plus exon 1, intron 1, and part of exon 2. This strain is a fluorescent reporter for Acta2 expressing myofibroblasts. The Donating Investigator reports red fluorescence is detected in Acta2 expressing myofibroblasts of healthy and fibrotic kidney, with minimal red fluorescence in striated muscle. Hemizygotes are viable and fertile. Homozygous viability/fertility has not been tested to date (October 2017). 
 Of note, The Jackson Laboratory colony of BALB/c-congenic aSMA-RFP mice often exhibit pink color in the fur and skin (hemizygous mice can be quite distinctive from the noncarrier littermates) [November 2019].
