Akap5 (A kinase (PRKA) anchor protein 5; also called AKAP150) encodes a scaffolding protein from its single coding exon which binds and coordinates a multi-enzyme complex. This complex includes protein kinase A (PKA; implicated in hyperglycemic/diabetic vasoconstriction), protein kinase C (PKC), and the protein phosphatase calcineurin to facilitate signaling to specific substrates, including CaV1.2. 

The protein kinase C binding domain of Akap5 has been deleted in this PKC &Delta;C targeted mutant strain. Levels of AKAP5 &Delta;C protein expression are similar to those of the wildtype AKAP5 protein. PKC can no longer bind AKAP5 &Delta;C.

Consistent with results in arteries from Akap5 knockout mice, basal tone in pressurized (60 mmHg) middle cerebral arteries is slightly reduced in the &Delta;C mice than in arteries from littermate controls.
