Detailed description

These mice carry a floxed allele of the mouse Atxn1l (ataxin 1-like) gene. Cre-mediated excision of the floxed region results in a knock-out allele.

Heterozygous and homozygous floxed mice are viable, fertile and live a normal life span. Homozygous knockout of Atxn1l (see Stock No. 017942) causes hydrocephalus, omphalocele and lung alveolarization defects in addition to postnatal lethality.

Disruption of the ATXN1/ATXN1L-CIC complex causes a spectrum of neurobehavioral phenotypes in mice and humans.

Development

A loxP site was introduced to intron 3 and a loxP-flanked TK-neomycin resistance cassette was placed in exon 4 following the Atxn1l open reading frame. This same targeting vector was previously used create the knockout mutation found in Stock No. 017942. 129S7/SvEvBrd-Hprt1⁺-derived AB2.2 embryonic stem (ES) cells were used to create the mutation. This strain was backcrossed to both C57BL/6N and C57BL/6J sublines by the donating laboratory.
