Rbm17 (RNA binding motif protein 17) is an RNA-binding protein that has been implicated in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. RBM17 protein binds ataxin 1 (ATXN1) in a polyglutamine- and phosphorylation-dependent manner. Studies suggest RBM17 normally represses the splicing of cryptic junctions and its loss leads to the inclusion of intronic elements in mature transcripts.

This targeted mutant strain carries a knock-out allele of the mouse Rbm17 gene. A functional &beta;-gal gene incorporated in the construct enables lacZ cell staining. Broad staining patterns are seen in the brain, including the cortex, hippocampus, midbrain, cerebellum and brain stem. Heterozygous mice are viable, fertile and live a normal lifespan. RBM17 protein levels are reduced by about 40% in the heterozygous mice. Homozygotes die before implantation.

Crosses with Gt(ROSA)26Sor-Flp mice have produced conditional mutant mice in which exon 4 is flanked by loxP sites (see Stock No. <a href="https://www.jax.org/strain/030715"">030715</a>). Cre-mediated excision of a remaining floxed region enables tissue-specific knock-outs of the Rbm17 gene.
