GcgCreER2 mice have a creERT2 fusion gene (a Cre recombinase fused to a human estrogen receptor ligand binding domain) inserted into exon 2 of the glucagon (Gcg) gene. 
 Glucagon is a pancreatic hormone that counteracts the glucose-lowering action of insulin by stimulating glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. Defects in insulin-producing beta cells are a leading cause of diabetes development. 
 GcgCreER2 homozygous mice are viable but infertile due to glucagon deficiency. When these mice are bred with mice containing loxP-flanked sequence, tamoxifen-inducible Cre-mediated recombination will result in deletion of the floxed sequences in the Cre-expressing cells of the offspring. The islets of these mice display the expected hyperplasia in Cre-positive alpha cells. Mice express cre/ERT2 in 93-96% of alpha cells and in a negligible amount of beta cells. Some expression is also seen in intestinal L cells and GLP-1 producing neurons. Of note, an iCre knock-in line is also available as Stock No. <a href="https://www.jax.org/strain/030663">030663</a>.
