These mice carry a knockout allele of the mouse Cic (capicua transcriptional repressor) gene. Heterozygotes are viable and fertile, but homozygotes die perinatally at postnatal day 0 (P0) due to multiple organ defects which include hydrocephalus, abdominal wall closure defects, and lung defects. Heterozygotes show mild hyperactivity in the open field assay. Mutant mice are indistinguishable from wildtype sibling controls in the elevated plus-maze test and fear conditioning assays. This strain may be useful in studying genetic modifiers of spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) and other neurological diseases.

Although lacZ was incorporated in the targeting construct, its functionality has not been tested.
