These targeted knock-in/knock-out mutant mice express tamoxifen-inducible cre-ERT2 fusion protein from the mouse Ntrk3 (neurotrophic tyrosine kinase, receptor, type 3; also called TrkC) promoter. Expression occurs in Ntrk3-expressing cells, including subsets of dorsal root ganglia neurons and the spinal cord. 

Knock-in of cre-ERT2 at the transcriptional start site creates a presumptive knock-out allele of the Ntrk3 gene. Heterozygotes are viable, fertile and show no overt phenotype. Homozygotes are not viable (dying at birth).

When bred with mice containing a loxP-flanked sequence of interest, tamoxifen-inducible, cre-mediated recombination will result in tissue-specific deletion of the floxed region. The timing/dose of tamoxifen treatment has been shown to influence expression patterns.
