Description

Dcc^kanga is a spontaneous deletion of exon 9, the last coding exon, which encodes the P3 domain important for both homodimerization and attraction of growing axons. Homozygotes are ataxic, have difficulty remaining upright, and move with a hopping gait with the hindlegs moving together instead of in alternating strides. This hypomorph has aberrant development of the corticospinal tract with failure of axons to cross the midline in the normal locations. The corticospinal tract is absent from the dorsal funiculus of the spinal cord. The corpus callosum and anterior commissure are missing and the pontine nuclei are absent from the hindbrain.

Dcc^kanga is a spontaneous deletion of exon 9, the last coding exon, which encodes the P3 domain important for both homodimerization and attraction of growing axons. Homozygotes are ataxic, have difficulty remaining upright, and move with a hopping gait with the hindlegs moving together instead of in alternating strides. This hypomorph has aberrant development of the corticospinal tract with failure of axons to cross the midline in the normal locations. Development

The kanga mutation arose spontaneously in the strain CBy.AK-Tg^cog/J at The Jackson Laboratory in 1986 when that congenic was at generation N10. Since then, this mutant subline has been maintained by sibling intercrossing predominantly progeny tested heterozgyotes, and the Tg^cog allele was bred out. It was first characterized by The Jackson Laboratory Mouse Mutant Resource, then was transferred to the laboratory of Dr. Susan Ackerman, and then was returned to The Mouse Mutant Resource for sperm cryopreservation from heterozygous males. Standard cryo-recovery is scheduled to use BALB/cByJ ooctyes.
