Impdh2loxP mice possess loxP sites flanking exons 2-9 of the inosine 5'-phosphate dehydrogenase 2 (Impdh2) gene. IMPDH2 is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of inosine 5-phosphate (IMP) to xanthosine 5-phosphate (XMP), the first committed and rate-limiting step in the de novo synthesis of guanine nucleotides during cell growth. Mice that are homozygous for this allele are viable and fertile. When bred to mice that express tissue-specific Cre recombinase, resulting offspring will have exons 2-9 deleted in the cre-expressing tissues. 

For example, when bred to Wnt1-Cre transgenic mice (Stock No. <a href="https://www.jax.org/strain/003829">003829</a>), expressing Cre recombinase in in the midbrain and developing neural tube, homozygous mice live to term but do not survive after birth. They display defects in multiple neural crest derivatives including highly penetrant intestinal aganglionosis, near absence of the cranio facial skeleton, and cardiac outflow tract and great vessel malformations.
