These transgenic mice, made by the Genetically-Encoded Neuronal Indicator and Effector (GENIE) Project, express cytoplasmic green fluorescent calcium indicator, GCaMP3, in CA1 and subiculum hippocampal neurons and possibly other cell types and tissues. These transgenic mice express cytoplasmic green fluorescent calcium indicator GCaMP3 in CA1 and subiculum hippocampal neurons and possibly other cell types and tissues. The transgene contains a mouse Thy1 promoter, GCaMP3, woodchuck hepatitis virus posttranscriptional regulatory element (WPRE), and bovine growth hormone (bGH) polyadenylation sequence. The GCaMP3 indicator is an ultrasensitive detector of single neuronal action potentials. The mice can be used for imaging-based monitoring of neuronal activity in individual neurons in the brain and elsewhere. Expression has been demonstrated in CA1 and subiculum hippocampal neurons for in vivo imaging (photon excitation at λ920 +/- 6 nm). These mice were made by the Genetically-Encoded Neuronal Indicator and Effector (GENIE) Project at the HHMI's Janelia Farm Research Campus.
The mouse Thy1 promoter drives expression of this transgene that includes a mutagenized green fluorescent calcium indicator (GCaMP3), woodchuck hepatitis virus posttranscriptional regulatory element (WPRE), and bovine growth hormone (bGH) polyadenylation sequence. GCaMP consists of a circularly permutated green fluorescent protein (cpGFP), the calcium-binding protein calmodulin (CaM), and CaM-interacting M13 peptide. This strain was created and maintained on a C57BL/6J genetic background by the donating laboratory.

Therefore, we cannot guarantee a strain's phenotype will meet all expectations. To ensure that JAX® Mice will meet the needs of individual research projects or when requesting a strain that is new to your research, we suggest ordering and performing tests on a small number of mice to determine suitability for your particular project. We do not guarantee breeding performance and therefore suggest that investigators order more than one breeding pair to avoid delays in their research.
