These mice express Cre recombinase under the control of the murine msh homeobox 2 (Msx2) promoter. MSX2 acts as a transcriptional repressor during during both embryogenesis and postnatal development. During organogenesis MSX2 is expressed specifically during the development of the skull, teeth, and skin. Expression is also seen in prospective apical ectodermal ridge (AER) cells of both forelimb and hindlimb buds, and during postnatal oogenesis in secondary follicles. Hemizygotes are viable and fertile. When crossed with a strain containing a loxP site-flanked sequence, Cre-mediated recombination results in deletion of the flanked sequence in cre-expressing tissues. 

Of note, these mice express Cre recombinase at a later stage of folliculogenesis than C57BL/6-Tg(Zp3-cre)93Knw/J mice (Stock No. <a href="https://www.jax.org/strain/003651">003651</a>) which expresses in primary follicles.
