The P-glycoprotein encoded by the ABCB1, ATP-binding cassette, sub-family B (MDR/TAP), member 1, gene, is an ATP-dependent drug efflux transporter in the blood-brain barrier and is involved in multi-drug resistance. These transgenic mice express the firefly luciferase gene under the control of the human ABCB1, ATP-binding cassette, sub-family B (MDR/TAP), member 1, promoter and regulatory nuclear response elements. Luciferase activity is detected in the brain and spinal cord, with higher intensity of activity in the cortex compared with the cerebellum. Luciferase is detected in brain vessel capillary endothelial cells by ex vivo immunostaining. The transgene insertion location on Chromosome 3 was detected by in situ hybridization.
Mice that are homozygous for the transgene are viable and fertile.

These MDR1-luc mice express a transgene containing the luciferase gene under the control of the human ABCB1, ATP-binding cassette, sub-family B (MDR/TAP), member 1, gene promoter.
They are suitable for use in applications related to the study of the blood-brain barrier and ABCB1 expression in the brain and spinal cord with noninvasive in vivo imaging.
